I think Manson freaked at that chaos reported by the Cielo team and that's partly why he went to the La Biancas.
Eddy, it never dawned on me that an "after care" team to Cielo could see police lights from Sunset. That pushes up the probability for me that someone went back, but I still have a hard time wrapping my mind around Charlie putting himself in such a risk.
If it's true that upon the killers return to Spahn they were questioned by Manson why they were back so early, he may have felt there was still plenty of time to go back and survey the murder scene. IMO, the megalomaniac couldn't resist seeing for himself what had been described to him ("wanted to see what my children had done"), to "clean up" a bit and to possibly leave a false clue or two.
