I've often been curious about how the Family fed itself when staying in the desert.
Not an easy place to get in and out of, and not really anywhere close to make those regular garbage runs like they did from Spahn.
I realize we're talking about a smaller "Family unit" that went to the desert -- everyone didn't pack up and go -- but they still have to eat. And drink to stay hydrated (I remember something about Meyer Ranch being better equipped because it had a 'pool,' but that had to be rather stagnant and not suitable for drinking, right?) I realize bathing wasn't a priority, but water is essential for desert survival and needed for cooking and cleaning (gotta scrub those pots if you're going to keep cooking out of them), right?
Also, way less chances to enhance income than sending out Family members on various schemes (from stripping to stolen credit cards and drug deals/burns) because (a) there's not much local population-wise and (b) from all accounts it's a major chore just to get to the ranch or back and (c) there's not a lot of local targets of opportunity (you can't feed a group of people day by day ripping off the Ballarat General Store, they're gonna catch on sooner or later).
So how did they sustain themselves. Obviously they did, although it might have been a rather miserable experience. But what did they eat, where did they get supplies and how did they keep a constant influx of foodstuffs to such a remote and harsh location?
I read somewhere, cannot definitely quote where, that they made forays into Las Vegas for food. And went hungry a lot. I think that MAY have been Paul Watkins' book.
That's a long commute for brunch, haha.
I mean, wasn't it a better-part-of-a-day ordeal just to transverse to the ranch(es)? If it was during the summer, a lot of stuff would spoil. I don't picture the Fam with a bunch of stolen Yeti coolers with everything on ice.

paulhart: Hi Coldwater. I also heard about the attack on Manson by Mike Deasy with a pitchfork at Spahn's Ranch. Can you tell me where you heard about that incident? I'm trying to track down the original source. Was it Deasy himself? Was it in a book? Thanks, Paul
