(with apologies to Vickie)
After what infamous late '60s murder spree did the term "snuff film" first come into widespread use? You guessed it; it was apparently first used in Ed Sanders' The Family, which is of course a classic in Mansonia literature.
Unbelievably, the term was coined during the furor arising from the Manson Family murders of 1969. ...
In (his book), Sanders relates that the Family may have been involved in the making of “brutality” (or as he later terms them, “snuff”) films. This was the first recorded use of the term. The snuff film allegation comes from Sander’s interview with an anonymous one-time member of the Family in which Sanders hears about a “short movie depicting a female victim dead on a beach.”
(though he was referring to a victim other than the TLB victims)
As I reported in the shoutbox, the controversial talk show host Alex Jones recently claimed that a "snuff film" was made of the murder of Sharon Tate. He claimed the FBI had this in their files on the case.
See here at the 1:53:45 mark:
Now I have been studying TLB for a while and I had never heard of this even as a rumor. Is there any evidence for Jones' assertions? Was the murder of Sharon Tate filmed? None of the killers has ever even hinted at that. Or did Charlie or someone with him film the aftermath of the scene, in Charlie's alleged trip to the crime scene after Tex and company had returned to the ranch? Is that why the bodies of Sharon and Jay were possibly being moved around post-mortem?
There is of course no direct evidence, but there is some circumstantial evidence. It is apparently true that the Mansonoids were into filming themselves at several points, though Sanders amongst the authors is the only one who ever got into this, as far as I am aware.
Ed Sanders, The Family (origonal print edition)
"(The Family) stayed at the Horseshoe Lane* property for about six weeks(in February of '68) and this seems to be the first known time they got into making movies--or, as they say, allowing people with cameras to film their activities."
*19844 Horseshoe Lane, Topanga Canyon
"Mrs Cafritz took numerous motion pictures of Manson and the family in Reno(in December of '68) which no one seems to want to discuss."
"Around this time (spring of 1969) Charlie and the girls made a pornographic movie by the swimming pool at 2600 Nicholas Canyon Road in the hills above Malibu."
..Family members stole an NBC-TV truck loaded with film equipment sometime during the summer of 1969. The truck was later dumped and most of the film given away, but Manson kept one of the NBC cameras. The Family were also said to be in possession of three Super-8 cameras and to have used them to make homegrown porn films.
Jim Pursell, CHP Death Valley Resident Officer:
"So the ranger and I started that way, westbound, down Goler Wash. Pretty soon we met an old military 4x4 Dodge truck coming up the canyon. We stopped them. The driver was a middle-aged fella, and he had a teenage boy riding shotgun. We looked in the back of the pickup, and there was a whole lot of automotive parts, ignition parts, engine oil, and a big commercial movie camera. So I talked to the driver, and he said there was a group up there filming something. ...."
One thing is certain: none of these films made before Charlie's arrest in the desert in October of '69 have ever seen the light of day.
